Border Print Diamonds

Creating a diamond with a border print fabric can give a spectacular effect. Look for quilt blocks that do not have several diamonds meeting at the center of the block. This might cause too many points to come together and make it difficult to join the points smoothly. Inspiration Point is a good example of a block that would work well. Setting diamonds on point in lengthwise strips makes an attractive "strippy" quilt as seen in the quilt Diamonds are Forever.

To create a border print diamond, four triangles must be cut. Two are exactly the same and the other two are the exact mirror image of the first two.

  1. Divide the diamond in half lengthwise and sideways as shown in Diagram 2.
  2. Make a template from one of the four resulting triangles. Mark the arrow onto the template. This is very important as the arrow indicates the straight grain of fabric.
  3. Position the template onto the fabric. The longest side of the template must run along the straight grain (direction of arrow) Notice the placement in the diagram. The template must be placed so that a line from the border print will fall just inside the sewing line. The arrow will help you to place the template correctly. Diagram 3
  4. After positioning the template onto the border print, draw some portion of the design from the fabric onto the template. This will act as a guide for cutting the remaining pieces.
  5. Cut the first piece and then flip the template horizontally and carefully find the exact mirror image of the first piece. Diagram 4.
  6. Cut two more triangles exactly the same as the first two.
  7. Position the triangles according to diagrams 5 and 6.
